Drs. Skowron & Curtin
Enhance Your Smile with Dr. Skowron
Veneers are thin shells that are placed over the surface of your teeth to hide cosmetic flaws. They’re made from durable, tooth-colored porcelain to ensure a stunning appearance and long-lasting results.
Dr. Skowron will customize your porcelain veneers so they blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth, helping you achieve a beautiful smile that you’ll be proud to show off for years to come. We recommend veneers for treating the following issues:
- Chipped and cracked teeth
- Stained and discolored teeth
- Crooked or misshapen teeth
- Gaps between teeth
The Veneers Process
Getting veneers is a fast and easy process that’s typically completed in just two appointments. During your first visit, Dr. Skowron will take a detailed impression of your smile and send it to a laboratory where your veneers will be customized just for you.
In about two weeks, your new beautiful porcelain veneers will be ready and you can return to our office. Dr. Skowron will ensure that the fit and color are perfect before he bonds the veneers to your teeth with a special dental adhesive.
Veneers are a non-surgical treatment, so you won’t have to worry about a painful or inconvenient recovery period. Once your veneers are in place, all that’s left to do is enjoy your sparkling new smile.
Candidacy for Porcelain Veneers
Any patient who has unwanted cosmetic issues with their smile is a candidate for porcelain veneers. Generally speaking, there are no major obstacles that prevent patients from receiving this treatment, though being in good oral health is always preferred.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do veneers last?
With proper care and biannual visits to our Winnetka dental office, porcelain veneers can still look great after 20 years. To maximize your results, we recommend avoiding foods that can stain, chip, or discolor the veneers. You’ll also want to brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and rinse between meals.
Regular visits and an excellent oral hygiene routine, will ensure your veneers, gums, and natural teeth are in the best of health and improve the longevity of your stunning smile.
Is the veneers procedure painful?
The porcelain veneers procedure is completely pain-free. If you prefer, our dentist can numb the area so you won’t feel a thing. After you receive your new veneers, your teeth and gums may feel sensitive for a few days.
Any discomfort can be relieved with over-the-counter pain medications such as Ibuprofen or by applying a cold compress.
Can porcelain veneers fall off?
If your dentist doesn’t properly apply the veneers, they can slide off. With normal wear, your porcelain veneers may come off as well. That’s why choosing a highly trusted dentist, such as Drs. Skowron and Curtin will ensure they’re properly applied.
A regular oral hygiene routine, in addition to scheduling biannual appointments at our Winnetika location, will ensure your veneers are intact and in their best shape. If a veneer falls off, be sure to keep it safe in a container and contact our office immediately by calling (847) 446-0970.
We may be able to re-adhere your veneer, or recommend a new one. It’s important to avoid trying to fix it on your own as this may damage the surface of the veneer, or your teeth or gums.
What are the care instructions for porcelain veneers?
After receiving your new smile, you’ll want to follow a few guidelines to ensure the longevity of your new pearly whites. These include:
- Follow a regular oral hygiene routine by brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and rinsing between meals
- Schedule biannual visits at our Prescott Valley location
- Avoid biting into apples, carrots, or anything that might damage your veneers
- Refrain from biting into hard candies
- Stay away from bones when eating foods like chicken wings or chicken legs.
- Wear a bite guard if you grind your teeth
- Avoid foods and beverages that might stain your veneers such as coffee, tea, wine, berries, and certain sodas.
In addition to these guidelines, you’ll want to slowly incorporate new foods into your diet over the first few weeks while you adjust to your new smile.
Are there any risks associated with getting veneers?
Veneers have been around since the 1920s and are considered a trusted treatment to fix a variety of dental issues. While most people have a great experience with veneers, there are a few things you’ll want to look out for, including:
- If food is accumulating around the edges, you’ll need to have them adjusted
- If veneers aren’t properly bonded, they may turn a grayish color from food particles getting trapped underneath the veneers
- If veneers are too large, they can cause a gum infection
While issues are rare, you’ll want to be sure to undergo the procedure with a knowledgeable dentist such as Dr. Skowron and Dr. Curtin to mitigate risks and ensure the best possible outcome for your new flawless smile. If you have any problems with your new veneers, contact our office immediately and we’ll get you an appointment at your earliest convenience.
